OUR DAILY WASTE is an embarrassing, frightening, but an honest portrait of my family. At the same time, however, it is a portrait and a reflection of changes in society, where "time pressures" takes over life completely. More people have a good income, food becomes cheaper and food resources become less and less valued. A portrait that unfortunately many will be able to recognise of themselves - and not just in Norway.

This is the first time that a thorough examination of all of a family's food waste has been carried out over a whole year. The food waste was dissected, weighed and sorted into different categories. The work has resulted in more than 1,078 images, with associated information and statistics. Every day and every picture is a little story in itself.
Part 1 of the project has become a book and several exhibitions.
The book has been awarded GOLD in "The most beautiful books of the year 2021"

WHAT IS THROWN AND HOW MUCH? »

ITALY

Italy's food waste costs the country as much as 15 billion euros each year - equivalent to 0.88% of the country's GDP.

USA

The United States is among the countries that throw by far the most. As much as 40 million tonnes of food find their way to the landfill every year. This is equivalent to the same weight as the Empire State Building - 109 times.

GREECE

Each year, 473 million kilos of food are thrown away in Greece. It is a huge food waste, but still Greece is among the countries that throw the least.

ENGLAND

Every day, 24 million slices of bread are thrown in England - 900,000 tons of bread each year.

Every year, 10 million tonnes of food are thrown away in South Africa. But here, in contrast to countries in Europe, consumers account for only 5% of food waste in the chain - compared to over 50% in many European countries.

SOUTH AFRICA

AUSTRALIA

Australia produces a huge amount of food waste. Every year, 7.3 million tonnes of food are thrown away. Thats a staggering 298 kg of food waste per person.

SOUTH- and CENTRAL AMERICA

20% of all food waste comes from this region. A region where about 50 million inhabitants go to bed hungry every day. With all the food wasted, only in retail, nearly 70% of the population of Latin America could be fed hungry.

RUSSIA

The Russians throw away 17 million tons of food - that equals 1.6 billion rubles (195 million NOK) every year.

FRANCE

In one year, France's food waste emits 15.3 million tonnes of CO2, which represents 3% of the country's total CO2 emissions.

SWEDEN, DENMARK and NORWAY

The Swedes throw away 1.3 million tonnes of food every year, against the Danes' 716,000 tonnes. Norway throws 385.000 tonnes of food.

CHINA

China throws away a staggering 60 million tons of food every year. But distributed among the population, it is "only" 43 kg per person every year.

"From daily waste to zero waste"

The family has now seen the result of their own food waste and what it has to say for both the economy, the environment and their conscience. In part 2, the family will find and test simple methods that will reduce food waste by more than 50%.

Are there technologies and methods that can make it easier for us not to throw away food? What methods work, are they easy to implement and are there anything we are willing to do every day?

Part 2 contains all the facts and photos from part 1, as well as a number of new videos from the experiments, tips on what you can do to reduce your food waste and recipes.
